Population

Bradford District's total population has changed very litle since the 1991 Census was taken. Government estimates show that Bradford's population has decreased by less than half of one per cent - a change of only 1,100. By contrast most other large cities have lost a greater percentage of their populations - Liverpool, Manchester and Newcastle by between 5 - 10%, and Birmingham, Bristol and Sheffield by between 1-5%.

* N.B. As the population figures have been rounded independently, the entries for each table in the population section may not add exactly to the total.

Although more people leave than come to live in Bradford, the District's young population structure means there are more births than deaths; and continuing immigration adds to the population.

Population estimates for 2003

The Office for National Statistics have recently published their mid-year population estimate for 2003. The District's population is estimated at 477,800. This information is not as detailed as the information from the 2001 Census, and so this data has been used to produce this section.

Bradford's population 1901 to 2001

Bradford's population grew at the beginning of the twentieth century, when its industrial fortune was good in relation to the rest of the world. It has remained at a similar level since the 1970s through the growth of immigrant communities.

The results of the 2001 Census show that young people make up a larger proportion of the district's population than nationally.

When the composition of the population is compared with the previous census results, it shows that the workforce is growing older; and that there are more elderly people aged 75 and over, although Bradford has a lower proportion than the national average.

Cultural Origins

* Religion

The census also included an optional question about religion for the first time.

In Bradford 8% of residents did not answer the question, and 13% stated that they had no religion. 60% said that they were Christian (the figure for England and Wales was 72%). 16% said they were Muslim, making this the fourth highest behind Tower Hamlets, Newham, and Blackburn; and over five times the proportion for England and Wales. 1% said they were Hindu (this duplicates the National figure), and 1% said they were Sikh (nearly twice the National figure of 0.6%).

* Country Of Birth

The census results show that 88% of Bradford's residents were born in the UK, slightly less than ten years ago (90%). The equivalent national figure is only slightly greater at 91%. The number of people in Bradford who were born outside the UK, increased from 9% to 10%, and is higher than the national average of 7%.

The composition of the District is now firmly multicultural, with 22% of the population in ethnic groups other than white.

Indian, Bangladeshi, and Caribbean ethnic groups have all maintained their numbers.

The most significant increases have been seen in the Pakistani group who now form nearly 15% of the total population, and the number of people stating mixed origins who now total 8,000 residents. Bradford has the highest percentage of people with Pakistani origins in Britain .

Whilst growing in size, the Black and Asian population has also spread out of Bradford. The Census records more who have left the District than entered it from other parts of Britain .
