European is a sub-category of: Ethnic and nationality minorities European has the following sub-categories:
European is also related to: Travellers and Gypsy, Eastern European, Italian and Irish communitiesScattered across the district there are well established communities of people from Eastern European nations, including the Ukraine , Poland , Latvia , Serbia , Estonia and Hungary. In Keighley there is an Italian population. These communities date from the period after World War 2, when refugees and displaced people, fleeing violence and political upheaval, came to take up work in Bradford’s mills. There are now second and third generation members of these communities living in the district. Another ethnic community, with a longer historical link with Bradford, reaching back into the 19 th Century, are made up of migrants from Ireland , also originally attracted by the employment offered within Bradford’s mills. These communities are not to be found in any particular geographic area, and people are scattered across the District. They express their identity by their membership of social groups and churches – the Ukrainian Orthodox Church or the Polish Social Club for example. The people who arrived in Bradford after World War 2 are now elderly. As they grow older some have more difficulty communicating in English and there is a danger that they become isolated in the wider neighbourhood. They, of course, may also have the other problems that come with old age.
The statistics below show where people are born. Consequently it only includes first generation migrants. Selected European populations: Table S015 COUNTRY OF BIRTH BY AGE
Taken from: TABLE UV08 COUNTRY OF BIRTH (Census 2001)
