People who are alcohol dependent

Excessive consumption of alcohol is a community issue, as it is linked with a range of other issues that contribute to social exclusion.

It is associated with poor physical and mental health. It is a factor in many suicides. It is at the core of much domestic violence and family breakdown. It is both a cause and a result of homelessness.

There are particular issues concerning young people, both young women and men, as excessive alcohol consumption can lead to exclusion from school and dropping out of further training, and to unemployment. It is a major factor in unsafe sex, and teenage pregnancy. It is at the root of much vandalism, disorderly behaviour and violence.

Excessive use of alcohol is something that effects people in all parts of the District, although within more prosperous households it may be easier for the problem to remain hidden. However, education programme's and support services for people wanting to overcome addiction are under-resourced on a national basis, and the issue is made more complex by the social acceptability of alcohol, and by the aggressive marketing of alcohol, particularly to young people.
