People with mental health problems is also related to: Families with children with disabilities, Older People, Drug and alcohol users, People recovering from mental health problems
People recovering from mental health problems face particularly acute exclusion and discrimination. They experience problems getting employment and they are often not part of the social and community networks that inform and give access to everyday goods and services. They frequently feel they are non-citizens, with no rights, who will not be taken seriously and whose views will not be listened to. Mental illness is still widely regarded with fear and ignorance. Media reports fuel this as, by highlighting a very small number of incidents, it misleadingly portrays people with mental health problems as violent. This only perpetuates the lack of understanding and acceptance. The stigma and isolation experienced by people with mental health problems makes recovery more difficult, as confidence and self-worth is undermined. This means that they may be particularly reluctant to identify themselves and to take part in consultation. Yet they are full members of the community, and their input is as valid as any other local resident.
