The Census is a ten yearly survey of the whole population of Great Britain. The 2001 Census took place on 29 April 2001. The information from the Census is used by central and local government, health authorities and other organisations to target their resources and plan services. The majority of the data from the 2001 Census has now been released. The 2001 Census provides a wide variety of information on the population of an area and its characteristics. Data from the 2001 Census is available from the UK level down to small geographical areas of approximately 125 households called output areas. The Office for National Statistics is responsible for planning, undertaking and providing the results of the Census. Further details on the way that the Census was undertaken can be obtained from the Office for National Statistics census pages. These pages give access to the results from the 2001 Census and details of analysis that have been carried out.
